Staffordshire Oatcakes

This is very exciting, like finding a long-lost treasure. Tesco are selling Staffordshire Oatcakes, a supremely delicious delicacy from up North of the England (Staffordshire, obviously, to be precise).

Growing up in Manchester, we used to eat these stack after stack for lunches over the weekend, warming them up and filling them with fried eggs, bacon, and mushrooms.

Or melted cheese.

Or spreading them with cream cheese and jam.

A little like the French galette but in my opinion even more delicious. Since moving down to the South of England, every other shopping trip would involve a quick look over the bakery shelves looking for the elusive oatcakes. We had it good for a couple of years when Sainsbury’s stocked them. But for some bad reason they suddenly stopped. I never was able to find out why.

For many years before the rise of on-line shopping, we had no luck finding them in London and lunch options became that bit less exciting.

Recently I have discovered a few on-line options but part of the oatcakes appeal is their price. When the price triples because of postage, it becomes a rare treat rather than weekend habit.

And now Staffordshire Oatcakes are back and at 85p a pack, we may well start indulging in them on a daily basis.

Thank you, wise buyer at Tesco for such foresight,

Expect photos of Oatcakes lunches very soon!
